Craigievar Castle

Craigievar Castle ( Scottish Gaelic Creag (aidh) Mharr - Rock of Mar) is a Scottish tower castle with beginnings in the 16th century on the north banks of the Scottish River Dee .

description

Craigievar Castle is considered the most successful example of a Scottish tower castle , which, unlike the tower hill castle (Motte), is not built on an artificial hill. Three floors were laid out on a relatively small, L-shaped floor plan. The main tower has a fourth floor. Spiral stairs create a connection between the floors. Small oriel towers decorate the corners. Decorative machicolations (rows of machicolations ) were installed in the wall surfaces between these turrets , a purely decorative element without any defensive function . The tower reflects a successful connection between French and Scottish architectural styles throughout the construction. A slightly pink shimmering Harlputz gives the castle its special look.

history

The first mention of Craigievars dates back to 1457. The Mortimer family is registered in a statute that is kept in the castle. At the end of the 16th century, construction began on the castle as you can see it today. Due to financial difficulties, the Mortimer family had to sell their properties. The new owner was William Forbes , brother of the Archbishop of Aberdeen . Forbes was a trader, and he used the proceeds of his trade missions to finance the construction of the castle. The Forbes family lived in Craigievar House for over four hundred years. In 1963 Craigievar became the property of the National Trust for Scotland . This foundation is concerned with the preservation of historic landmarks in Scotland.
