Crash box

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A shock absorber system is called a crash box in automotive engineering .

In a traffic accident is by deformation of materials within the crash box kinetic energy degraded to the vehicle occupants and the entire structure of a lower retarding force to suspend. This is intended to prevent impermissible deformations on the structure (which can sometimes mean total loss ) and injuries to the occupants. Crash boxes are used for collisions up to a certain impact speed z. B. designed from 15 km / h. They can be replaced at relatively low cost after an accident. This enables a more favorable classification into the type classes for fully comprehensive insurance .
