Type class (insurance)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The type class is an index value for calculating the insurance premium for motor vehicle liability insurance and comprehensive insurance in Germany . This value is determined annually by a trustee based on the damage requirement for each vehicle type. The claim requirement is the quotient of the sum of the claims expenditure in the corresponding calendar year and the number of annual units. The index value shows the ratio of the claims requirement of a single vehicle type to the comparable claims requirement of all vehicle types. The type classes are not binding for the insurance companies, but deviations are the exception. Vehicles with a low number of registrations and a lack of a comparative model are assigned to a type class according to a so-called preamble, which is based on the vehicle strength.

In the motor vehicle liability insurance there are the type classes from 10 to 25, in the fully or partially comprehensive insurance from 10 to 34, or from 10 to 33. The higher the type class, the higher the claims index. If a change in the type class leads to a higher premium , the policyholder has an extraordinary right of termination according to Section 40 VVG , just like a premium increase through a change in the regional class. If both the type and the regional class change , the right of termination only exists if the combination of the change leads to a premium increase.

For imported vehicles or new vehicles coming onto the market, a preliminary type class is determined based on comparable vehicle types. There are now around 29,000 types of passenger car in Germany. Each vehicle is assigned to a type class, some of which can even differ greatly within the same vehicle class. Until mid-1996, the engine power of a vehicle was used for premium calculation in motor vehicle liability insurance, and in full and partially comprehensive insurance since the 1980s.

The type class in motor vehicle liability insurance is primarily influenced by the type of vehicle and the driving style of the user. In comprehensive insurance, in addition to traffic accidents, car theft, vehicle fires or glass damage are also taken into account when classifying the type class.
