Bernd Scheifele (born May 5, 1958 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German manager. From 2005 to 2020 he was CEO of HeidelbergCement .

Life

After graduating from Dillmann-Gymnasium in May 1977, Bernd Scheifele worked on the assembly line at Daimler-Benz in Untertürkheim for a month . He then did military service from 1977 to 1978 . Instead, he studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau and spent a year in Dijon (France). In 1983 he passed the first state examination and completed a one-year Master of Laws degree at the University of Illinois in the USA as a Fulbright scholar . He then passed the second state examination and received his doctorate in Freiburg. From 1988 to 1994 Bernd Scheifele worked for the business law firm Gleiss Lutz in Stuttgart .

On October 1, 1994, he was appointed CEO of Phoenix Pharmahandel ( Mannheim ). In 2004 Scheifele was Chairman of the Supervisory Board and, since February 1, 2005, Chairman of the Management Board of HeidelbergCement. He is also chairman of the supervisory board of Phoenix Pharmahandel and the supervisory board of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group .

Under Scheifele, HeidelbergCement took over the British building materials group Hanson in 2007 for 9.5 billion pounds (14.0 billion euros). He also led the company through the global financial crisis and in 2010 in the German stock index DAX. In the same year Scheifele positioned itself as one of 40 signatories of the Energy Policy Appeal , a lobbying initiative of the four large electricity companies with the aim of extending the service life of German nuclear power plants . With the takeover of Italcementi under his aegis, which was completed in 2016, HeidelbergCement strengthened its leading role among building materials companies worldwide. In November 2016, there was controversial media coverage after Scheifele had established a connection between the potential construction of a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico and HeidelbergCement's profit opportunities. On February 1, 2020, after 15 years as CEO of HeidelbergCement, Bernd Scheifele handed over his office to his deputy Dominik vonhaben .

He is married and has four sons.
