history

In the early 1990s, Adolf Merckle increasingly bought into regional pharmaceutical wholesalers . In October 1994 he joined F. Reichelt AG (Hamburg), Otto Stumpf GmbH (Berlin), Ferd. Schulze GmbH (Mannheim), Otto Stumpf AG (Nuremberg) and Hageda AG (Cologne) to form Phoenix AG. Some of the individual pharmaceutical companies still exist today as leasing and finance companies of the Merckle family.

Merckle appointed business lawyer Bernd Scheifele as chairman. With sales of 3.2 billion euros and a 30 percent market share, Phoenix immediately became the market leader in Germany. Through numerous acquisitions, the company quickly grew to become the current market leader in many European countries. It was already active in Italy, Hungary and the Netherlands in 1995. In 1999 the number of employees rose to over 10,000 for the first time. In 2001 two thirds of sales were generated abroad for the first time. Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom were added by the turn of the millennium. While the business in France, the United Kingdom and also in the Baltic States was further expanded, Phoenix gave up the wholesale business in Poland. In 2011 the company announced a new corporate brand for the retail trade, BENU pharmacies are now in 10 European countries.

In 2016, the Dutch Brocacef Groep, a joint venture between Phoenix and Celesio ( McKesson Europe ), took over around 500 Mediq pharmacies and thus assumed a leading market position in the Netherlands. In 2018 the Romanian pharmaceutical wholesaler Farmexim and the nationwide pharmacy chain Help Net Farma are taken over.
