Italcementi was founded in Scanzo near Bergamo, Italy, in 1846 as a Società Bergamasca for the production of cement and hydraulic lime . The company produced a new type of cement, Scanzo cement, which gained popularity and was used in various projects such as the 16-arch bridge over the Adda River , the Venezia Santa Lucia train station and the Suez Canal (underwater concrete).

In the early 1920s, the company merged with the Pesenti family construction company and created a group with 12 factories and 1,500 employees that produced 210,000 tons of cement annually. In 1925 the company went public on the Italian stock exchange . The company was renamed Italcementi in 1927. This year there were 33 cement plants with a production of 1.8 million tons, which corresponds to 44% of the Italian market. The company was controlled by Cesare Pesenti. In the 1950s, Italcementi supplied the cement for the construction of the Pirelli Tower.

In 1992, Ciments Français was taken over, making the group the largest cement manufacturer in the world. Since 1998 it has grown further through the acquisition of new cement plants in Bulgaria , Kazakhstan , Thailand , Morocco , India , Egypt , Kuwait and the United States .

During the Shanghai World's Fair in 2010, Italcementi introduced the first transparent cement (protected as i.light) using thermoplastic polymer resin in the special cement mix. In 2007, Italcementi introduced a new cement that maintains smog with improved titanium dioxide. In 2015 Italcementi introduced a smog-cleaning biodynamic cement with photocatalytic properties. It converts the pollutants contained in the outside air into inert salts.

In 2015, the German group HeidelbergCement submitted an offer to initially take over 45% of the shares for 1.7 billion euros and acquired the remaining shares on October 12, 2016, so that HeidelbergCement is now the sole shareholder of Italcementi.
