The Capri battery is a multiple with a print run of 200 copies by Joseph Beuys from 1985.

The multiple

The work consists of an incandescent lamp with a yellow, opaque glass body in a simple black lamp holder, which has a plug on the base. There is a lemon on top of it. The arrangement suggests that the solar energy converted by the plant organism flows as an electric current through the incandescent lamp and makes it glow continuously. As the heaviest part, the lemon holds the whole - roughly right-angled - structure; the light bulb protrudes diagonally upwards. The object was placed in a wooden box with Beuys' instructions for use “JOSEPH BEUYS. Capri battery. Replace the battery after 1000 hours " sold.

Emergence

At the end of May 1985, Joseph Beuys fell ill with interstitial pneumonia . During a convalescent stay in Naples and on Capri from September 3 to 18, 1985, the sculpture Scala Libera, 1985 , and the prototype of the Capri battery were created . It was created in the "Villa Quattro Venti" of the gallery owner Lucio Amelio on Capri. On October 18, 1985, Amelio exhibited a showcase in his gallery in Naples. Joseph Beuys placed the object asymmetrically on the narrow side in the showcase. The multiple was later produced by Amelio and published in an edition of 200 copies.

Expo 2000

At Expo 2000 , North Rhine-Westphalia presented itself in the German pavilion with Beuys' Capri battery, the smallest object in the sixteen federal states. After the world exhibition, the Beuys collection in the NRW art collection was expanded to include the Capri battery .

In the play Der Hut by Joseph Beuys , the history teacher ( Roland Eugen Beiküfner ) explains the Capri battery.

Art history quotes

In the Capri Battery, the unknown versions by Alexander Janz , the lemon in the original work was replaced by other fruits and the color of the lightbulbs was adapted.
