The hat by Joseph Beuys is a German play by Friederike Pöhlmann-Grießinger from 2008 based on an idea by Roland Eugen Beiküfner .

history

The actor Roland Eugen Beiküfner had the idea for this play when his daughter Miriam Elisa Dorothee Beiküfner was born on May 12, 2003 in the Sana Clinic, Nuremberg . Friederike Pöhlmann-Grießinger from Kunst und Drama in Nuremberg developed the concept of the fictitious dialogue and wrote the two-act play in September and October 2008, which was performed on December 5, 2008 in the theater of the case factory under the direction of Udo Martin in Fürth with Roland Eugen Beiküfner premiered as an actor. The Swiss premiere took place on November 11, 2009 in Davos at the invitation of Wim Verhaegen in Ella, also with Roland Eugen Beiküfner as an actor. The Austrian premiere was in Dornbirn on January 23, 2020. In terms of theatrical complexity, the piece deals in two acts with the life, work and thought of the German action artist, monumental sculptor, draftsman, educator and politician Joseph Heinrich Beuys (1921–1986).

content

The story is a fictional dialogue between the retired history teacher Roland Ebenhart, former Joseph Beuys student, and the legendary felt hat of Joseph Beuys. The felt hat and the history teacher Roland Ebenhart go on a journey into the past together. From the respective perspective they tell of the life and time of the radio operator, family man, monumental sculptor, politician and artist and occasionally also remember actions, curiosities, art exhibitions, scandals, headlines and political agitations, works, programs and publications together.

action

1st act

In the first act, Roland Ebenhart appears from the auditorium with suitcase and bag and tells of a visit to the Joseph Beuys Archive at Moyland Castle . There he was approached by an employee of the museum about his hat, which looks very similar to Joseph Beuys' felt hat. Due to this mix-up, Roland Ebenhart associates his own hat with the hat of the art professor, who is supposed to help him get closer to his former art professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , when he is traveling home from Bedburg-Hau at night . The myths about the plane crash with a Junkers Ju 87 series B in the Crimea in 1944 from various sources are addressed. About the relationship with the animal filmmaker Heinz Sielmann it goes to the first years at the art academy Düsseldorf over Ewald Mataré , the brothers Hans van der Grinten and Franz Joseph van der Grinten to the first exhibitions and actions in Aachen , Düsseldorf , Vienna and Antwerp . From the rejection of Robin Christian Andersen and Adolf Hitler in the selection process at the Vienna Art Academy in 1908, Joseph Beuys and a few students moved on to the secretariat of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. The first act ends with the termination without notice by the then Science Minister and later Federal President Johannes Rau because of the occupation of the secretariat.

2nd act

Roland Eugen Beiküfner explains as history teacher Roland Ebenhart in the second act of the play "The hat from Joseph Beuys" by Friederike Pöhlmann-Grießinger the Capri battery from Joseph Beuys

The second act begins with a quote from Joseph Beuys and his legal action against Johannes Rau's termination without notice . The fictional person Roland Ebenhart and the hat get excited in a conversation about the effects of Joseph Beuys' political activities. The first performance I like America and America likes Me in New York City is discussed, the installation show your wound in Munich, those of documenta 5 , documenta 6 and documenta 7 are also mentioned and examined in relation to time. The Capri battery is explained in detail . The protagonists report on the efforts that Joseph Beuys made for these campaigns, especially for 7000 oak trees in Kassel. Regarding the artistic effect, Roland Ebenhart quotes Christoph Schlingensief , who in an interview from 2006 commented on the influence that Joseph Beuys had on him, and the hat quotes his master and his thoughts on capitalism . The second act ends with the report of the burial ceremony and the scattering of the ashes of Joseph Beuys in front of the Helgoland Bay and an off-screen voice with Beuys quotes “The cause lies in the future” and “The system is criminal, the state become the enemy of man ”.
