The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See in Upper Bavaria shows masterpieces by the expressionist painter Franz Marc in connection with works of art by his contemporaries and other important artists of the 20th century in a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions. The director of the museum is Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy .

History and conception

The Franz Marc Museum (old building)

The Franz Marc Museum was founded in 1986 to present the work of Franz Marc - one of the most important Bavarian artists of the 20th century - in the region that gave this artist so much inspiration. Even as an academy student, Marc from Munich was drawn to the Kochel area to study painting. In 1908 he finally moved to the Bavarian Oberland and in 1914 bought a house in Ried (Kochel am See municipality). He called the landscape around Kochel his "Blue Land".

In the Franz Marc Museum over 150 works from the estate of Franz Marc can be seen, which are supplemented by various loans. In addition, there are many personal items and written documents from his life as well as works of art by his artist friends such as Paul Klee , Wassily Kandinsky , Gabriele Münter and Alexej von Jawlensky . The exhibition illustrates how Franz Marc and his artist friends, Der Blaue Reiter, decisively influenced art: from image to symbol to abstraction .

In 2008, the new extension by the Swiss architects Diethelm & Spillmann brought new possibilities for the museum concept: It expanded the exhibition area by around 700 square meters, so that Franz Marc's work could finally be put into a completely new context. Especially after the collection of the “ Etta and Otto Stangl ” foundation was added to the previous collection of the Franz Marc Foundation, it became possible to contrast the work of Franz Marc with works by his contemporaries, such as the Brücke artists. But Marc's work on artists of German abstract art after 1945 is also illustrated by selected works of art that are shown in relation to his work.

The hanging in the Franz Marc Museum is regularly redesigned. In addition, changing exhibitions show the various aspects of the collection. This makes it possible to present the whole range of the theoretical and artistic work of Franz Marc as well as his personality and his visionary reform spirit.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the artist's death on March 4, 2016, the museum dedicated a trilogy of exhibitions to him under the collective title “Franz Marc - Between Utopia and Apocalypse” (“The poor state of Tyrol”, “Grazing horses”, “Fighting forms”).

The Franz Marc Museum belongs to the MuSeenLandschaft Expressionism , together with the Museum of Fantasy ("Buchheim Museum") in Bernried on Lake Starnberg , the Museum Penzberg , the Murnau Castle Museum and the Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus and Kunstbau in Munich.

Association "Friends of the Franz Marc Museum"

The Friends of the Franz Marc Museum sponsor exhibitions on Franz Marc, artists from the Blue Rider and the Brücke, as well as on abstract art of the 20th century, especially German post-war art. Through their commitment, they make it possible to purchase works of art to supplement the collections of the Franz Marc Museum.

They support the development of new mediation offers to promote understanding of art and to show contexts and backgrounds. In addition, they enable series of discussions, events and symposia, scientific conferences on art and cultural history of the 20th century, as well as publications that document these events or present new research results. They also promote cultural events such as readings or concerts and support mediation offers for educationally disadvantaged sections of the population and young people.
