MuSeenLandschaft Expressionismus is a cultural marketing project operated by the WENGMANN Kulturmanagement, Kirsten Wengmann office for a customer group of five museums and five tourism organizations. It advertises the museums in question in the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills, other tourist destinations and partner hotels. The museums concerned are dedicated to expressionist movements in art: the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See, the Museum of Fantasy - also known as the Buchheim Museum - in Bernried, the Penzberg Museum in Penzberg, the Murnau Castle Museum in Murnau and the Municipal Gallery in the Lenbachhaus in Munich.

Participating museums

Five museums have committed to working group together "of museums Expressionism". They all share the focus of the exhibition on Expressionism and yet set individual accents through the history of their origins or namesake of the respective museums.

Exhibition focus of the museums

Franz Marc Museum

Franz Marc Museum

The Franz Marc Museum ( Lage ) is dedicated to the work of Franz Marc . His oeuvre was previously represented in Kochel exclusively by the collection of the Franz Marc Foundation. With the acquisition of the Etta and Otto Stangl Foundation collection, it can be juxtaposed with the work of his contemporaries, such as the " Brücke " artists.

Museum of Imagination

Buchheim Museum

The focus of the collection of the Buchheim Museum der Phantasie ( Lage ) is expressionism , especially with works by the artist group Brücke . The so-called "secondary collections" include handicrafts from all over the world, Bavarian folk art, cult objects from Africa and other non-European countries as well as works by the artist Lothar-Günther Buchheim.

Museum Penzberg

Museum Penzberg

The Penzberg Collection ( Lage ) contains the world's largest collection of works by Heinrich Campendonk , who was affiliated with the Blue Rider and worked in Penzberg, among others. In addition to Campendonk, another focus is on Gerhard Fietz , a member of the ZEN 49 group . Other permanent exhibitions deal with the history of Penzberg.

Murnau Castle Museum

Murnau Castle

In the center of the Murnau Castle Museum ( Lage ) are the works of Gabriele Münter as well as works by the artists of the " Neue Künstlervereinigung München " and the " Blauer Reiter ". Another focus is painting in the 19th century. The museum also presents its glass art collection and documentation on the life and work of the writer Ödön von Horváth .

Municipal gallery in the Lenbachhaus

Lenbachhaus, old and new buildings

The Lenbachhaus ( Lage ) presents Munich art of the 19th century, the art of the Blue Rider and the New Objectivity as well as, above all, international contemporary art. The museum has the world's largest collection of the art of the “Blue Rider”, one of the most important groups of artists of the avant-garde at the beginning of the 20th century.

The MuSeenLandschaft Ticket enables visitors to visit the other four partner museums with reduced admission after purchasing it. In addition, the association draws attention to a wide range of leisure activities in the region and provides information about overnight accommodation in partner hotels.

Location of museums related to Expressionism

The name "MuSeenLandschaft" is derived from the location of the respective museums. These are all located directly on or near the following lakes and rivers:

The geographical location is of great relevance in the art history context. Nowhere in Germany can you find such a dense art and natural landscape as between Munich and the edge of the Alps, where numerous museums offer a concentrated and high-quality overview of German Expressionism. In the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills between Munich, Murnau and Kochel, the art of the “Blue Rider” has its origins and ushered in a new art era worldwide.

In the early 20th century, the young Expressionists from Munich came to the Alpine foothills to capture nature in powerful colors and shapes. The artists of the Blauer Reiter Wassily Kandinsky , Gabriele Münter , Franz Marc , Alexej von Jawlensky and Heinrich Campendonk had particularly close ties to the region. Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner were also there before they became members of the Dresden artist group " Brücke ".
