creepy is an open source program written in Python that is used to extract the geodata of images that are stored in social networks such as B. Twitter or image hosts such as Flickr have been published, and then display them on a map.

installation

Under the current versions of Ubuntu and Kali Linux (formerly BackTrack ) as well as the unstable version of Debian , Creepy (version 0.1.94) is included in the software sources and can be installed directly; with older versions, the software can be installed after the corresponding Personal Package Archive (PPA) added. For Windows, the installation program and the source code of the program can be downloaded from GitHub (both version 0.2).

Display options

The images can be displayed on different cards; these include OpenStreetMap and Googlemaps . In addition to the images, the message that was sent with the image is also retrieved, if available.

criticism

The author wrote the program to make it clear how easy it is to collect the geospatial data from images and to process them graphically and to encourage users to consider beforehand whether they should put this data on the Internet together with their images would like. Another possible use is to collect data for a penetration test to ensure the security of your own company. It is obvious, however, that the program can also be used very well by criminals to collect data on a potential victim (see social engineering ).
