Crianza

Spanish wines with a minimum age of two years are referred to as crianza (from Spanish criar , ripe, raise) , which are then additionally matured for a period in oak barrels ( barrique development ). The minimum duration of the barrel aging depends on the respective regulation of the designation of origin ( DO ). So this duration is z. B. for Rioja wines at one year, for DO Toro wines only at six months.

Wines that mature in the oak barrel for less than the minimum time specified by the supervisory authority are unofficially called Semicrianza or Roble , but according to the DO authority they only correspond to a young wine .

Longer storage times result in Reserva or Gran Reserva wines.
