The Crichton Memorial Church is a non-denominational church building in the Scottish city ​​of Dumfries in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1986 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The widow Crichton of Friars' Carse donated the facility in the 1830s. Her late husband, who had made his fortune in East Asia, used his estate to set up a university in Dumfries. However, this could not be implemented. Instead, the Crichton Institution for Lunatics , now the Crichton Royal Hospital , opened on June 1, 1839 . 50 years after the facility opened, the expansion of the campus, also known as "The Crichton", began. The new buildings include the Crichton Farm model farm and the Crichton Memorial Church. It should be open to the religious care of patients and employees and is therefore not confessional. The Scottish architect Sydney Mitchell was responsible for the design of the church building, which was built between 1890 and 1897 .

The Crichton Memorial Church is located on a gentle slope between the clinic and the farm in the center of the campus. In terms of size and ornamentation, the neo-Gothic church is more reminiscent of a cathedral. The red sandstone building has a cross-shaped floor plan with a square, 37.4 m high crossing tower . The seven-axis long nave is designed with pointed arched windows and buttresses . The stained glass windows purchased from the Glass Stainers Company are clear and have no stained glass. The floors are covered with marble tiles. The organ with its richly ornamented oaken cabinet gave the London organ builder Lewis & Co . In 1907 the bronze desk with a large angel figure was installed.
