Cronachette

Cronachette is a collection of small chronicles which was published in 1985 as volume 100 of the La Memoria series published by Leonardo Sciascia by Sellerio Editore in Palermo . The texts were written at different times. Some of it has been revised for this edition. They cover a period from the beginning of the 17th century to the present day. A German translation has not yet been published.

The titles of the individual cronachettes

  • "Don Alonso Giron" (about the murder of a young page in April 1631 and about the persecution and conviction of the alleged or actual perpetrators)
  • "Don Mariano Crescimanno" (on the fate of an alleged heretic and his fanatical opponent towards the end of the 18th century)
  • "Il Principe Pietro" (about a criminal case in which "Prince Pierre", a cousin of Napoleon III. Is involved)
  • "La povera Rosetta" (about Rosetta, a young singer who was killed by police officers in Milan in 1913)
  • "Mata Hari a Palermo" (on the possible background to a visit by Mata Hari in Palermo "at the end of 1913)
  • "L'uomo dal passamontagna" (about the "man with the ski mask / hatred cap", a former union official who defected and selected prisoners in the stadium in Santiago de Chile in 1977)
  • "L'inestistente Borges" (about a newspaper report that Jorge Luis Borges never existed, but was the invention of some colleagues)

The French edition

In the French edition Petites chroniques , published in Paris in 1986 , three further texts were included.

  • "Manzoni e le lynchage de Prina" ("Il capitolo XIII. Manzoni e il linciaggio del Prina" / "The 13th chapter. Manzoni and the lynching of Prina"): The text that appeared first in this issue deals with the possible biographical backgrounds a chapter from Alessandro Manzoni's novel I Promessi Sposi .
  • "Garibaldi e le père Buttà" ("Garibaldi e il padre Buttà" / "Garibaldi and Pater Buttà"): The text originally appeared as a preface to Giuseppe Buttà's "Un viaggio da Boccodifalco a Gaeta" and is about the final phase of the Revolutionary Wars in 1860 / 61 in Sicily and from an encounter between the Bonapartist Father Buttà and Garibaldi .
  • "Pour un portrait de l'écrivain en jeune homme" ("Per un ritratto dello scrittore da giovane" / "Portrait of the writer as a young man"): The text first appeared in 1985 in the aforementioned series La Memoria as an independent volume and goes among other things an on the early correspondence between Giuseppe Antonio Borgeses and his uncle.

Awards

In 1986 the book was awarded the Premio Bagutta , one of the most important Italian literary prizes.
