Garvin Bushell

Garvin Bushell (* 25. September 1902 in Springfield , † 31 October 1991 in Las Vegas ) was an American jazz - saxophonist , clarinetist , bassoonist and oboist of oldtime jazz , swing and modern jazz . He played with Cab Calloway and Chick Webb, as well as John Coltrane and Gil Evans .

Garvin Bushell, son of a singing teacher and composer, studied piano in Ohio and saxophone, bassoon, oboe and flute in Paris, New York and Berlin. He came to New York around 1920 and made his first recordings in 1921 with Johnny Dunn and Mamie Smith ' Jazz Hounds ( "Royal Garden Blues" ). In 1923 he made further recordings with Perry Bradford . He visited Europe with Sam Wooding's orchestra and stayed in this band until 1925. From 1926 to 1928 he was a member of Cab Calloway's orchestra, then he played with the Louisiana Sugar Babies , a formation of Jabbo Smith , Fats Waller and James P. Johnson . With her he recorded the first bassoon solo in jazz history. He later worked with Otto Hardwick and Fletcher Henderson (1935/36), then Chick Webb hired him ; he stayed in the orchestra until 1940, which Ella Fitzgerald took over after Webb's death . In 1944 he recorded four tracks under his own name. From the 1950s onwards he mainly worked as a music teacher, and in 1950 he played the bassoon in the Chicago Civic Orchestra . In 1959 he worked with Wilbur De Paris and in the Reunion Band of the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. In 1961 he was involved as a guest musician on recordings of John Coltrane ; first at the Africa / Brass Session, then as a member of the sextet with Eric Dolphy ( Live at the Village Vanguard ) when the titles Spiritual and India were recorded on November 5th . In 1964 he took part in the April session of the Gil Evans Orchestra when the tracks "Hotel Me" and "Las Vegas Tango" were created. After a short stay in Puerto Rico , Bushell settled in Las Vegas and worked there as a music teacher.

Bushell was also involved in recordings of Bessie Smith (1930), Wild Bill Davison , Slim Gaillard (1940), Bunk Johnson , Ethel Waters and Rex Stewart . In 1988 his memoirs "Jazz from the Beginning" appeared.
