Replica of the Roughan Hill Tau Cross (2011)

The Cross Ineenboy (Gaelic Crois Iníne Baoith , after the holy Inghean Baoith) is a stone cross and is located in the Clare Heritage & Genealogy Center in Corofin , County Clare , Ireland . The cross, also known as the Tau Cross from Roughan Hill , was probably erected in the 12th century and served as a church boundary stone. The early monasticism of the Irish-Scottish church used such boundary stones to mark the area of a monastery as a sanctuary.

Detailed view of the replica (1989)

The name "Tau Cross" is derived from the 19th letter of the Greek alphabet, Tau ( τ ). This shape of the cross, a fusion of the post and the crossbar of a cross, found its way into Christian symbolism early on.

The cross was carved from a single piece of limestone , two faces with hands between them are carved on the top of the arms.

Originally the dew cross was south of the R476 road from Killinaboy ( Irish Cill Iníne Baoith ) to Kilfenora ( Cill Fhionnúrach ), also in County Clare. A replica of the monument stands there today.

The cross is a national monument with the designation "Tau Cross (Cross Inneenboy)" (No. 574) under monument protection .

Only eight other dew crosses of this type have survived in Ireland, in Ballypatrick, North Carrownaseer, Dalkey, Killegar, Kilmalkedar (2), Tawnagh and on Tory Island .
