CrunchBase, Inc. , headquartered in San Francisco is an American commercial database providers and news portal for corporate and business information with a focus on technology companies and investors. Information provided on a freemium basis includes data on investments and funding rounds, founding members and individuals in leadership positions, M&A deals, business news and industry trends. The Crunchbase website was originally developed in 2007 for the American start-up scene and today contains information on companies around the world and, according to its own information, has 50 million users. Crunchbase is an offshoot of the TechCrunch news portal and has been self-employed since 2015.

background

Crunchbase was founded in 2007 by Techcrunch's editor, Michael Arrington , to document all of the startups that Techcrunch had published articles about. From 2007 to September 2015, the Crunchbase database was part of the Techcrunch Group, which was taken over by the Internet company AOL in September 2010 . After AOL was taken over by Verizon in 2015 , Crunchbase was spun off from the AOL / Verizon group and its legal and economic independence; In September 2015, the now independent company received USD 6.5 million in funding from Emergence Capital. A follow-up round of USD 2 million followed shortly afterwards (November 2015). In 2016, the company launched Crunchbase Pro, its first paid product. In April 2017, another USD 18 million financing round took place through the investor Mayfield Fund.
