Cruzan Rum

Cruzan Rum has been partly handcrafted by the Nelthropp family since 1760, in the eighth generation. The name Cruzan comes from the (original) inhabitants of the island of Saint Croix , who are called Crucians.

Originally produced in normal combustion boilers, the rum is today due to the higher purity in special stills , called coloumn stills, distilled. Cruzan uses five column stills and only uses the middle part for ripening in order to keep all fusel oils and impurities out of the end product. Cruzan Rum is made exclusively from molasses , which is now imported due to the insufficient sugar cane plantations on St. Croix. The molasses is mixed with rainwater and yeast and after a short fermentation with an alcohol content of approx. 10%, it is added to the distillation .

Which is matured rum in once used Bourbon barrels of American oak.

After ripening, the rum is reduced to 40% drinking strength and bottled.

Cruzan was the first distillery to market flavored rum .
