Siegfried Hartwagner (born November 12, 1916 in Engerwitzdorf , Upper Austria ; † May 17, 2000 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian art historian and Carinthian state curator (1946–1981).

Life

He studied art history , journalism and German at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1942. At the same time, he participated in the World War. After the exit of the Nazi regime and the re-establishment of the Republic of Austria , Hartwagner got a job at the Federal Monuments Office , which entrusted the then thirty-year-old with the agendas of a state curator for Carinthia in Klagenfurt in 1946 .

In cooperation with the state government, Hartwagner succeeded in finding unusual ways to finance the restoration of numerous Gothic winged altars, which are the special pride of the state, and the ways in which their frescoes had been lost, and which were therefore objected to by the Court of Auditors. Thanks to the good cooperation with the ecclesiastical and responsible regional offices as well as the workshops of the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna , it was possible to carry out restorations on 750 churches and their valuable inventory, which also made it possible to gain essential knowledge about the building history. The rich inventory of medieval frescoes was expanded by another 350 through uncovering and restoration. During his tenure, the Klagenfurt country house was also subjected to extensive repairs and restoration.

In the series of Austrian art monographs, Hartwagner edited the volumes District and City of St. Veit an der Glan and the City of Klagenfurt.
