Crystal Warriors

Crystal Warriors (originally Ariel: Crystal Densetsu ) is a strategy role-playing game that was developed by Sega and published in Japan in 1991 for the Sega Game Gear . In 1992 an English version was published in the USA. It was the first strategy game released for Game Gear.

The game is playfully based on Fire Emblem , which means that you control a group of several heroes through a series of turn-based battles, which are displayed in top-down graphics. The game story is told in the always identical equipment and recruitment breaks between the fights in the form of city talks, there is no greater interaction with the environment in this game.

In the battles you control up to nine freely selectable heroes from the available set, which you control in rounds using a map divided into square fields. There is no fixed sequence of rounds in this game, so each piece can be moved independently. Confrontations are shown in the form of attack / counterattack in a side view. A simple rock-paper-scissors is used, which in this game is represented by the four elements that are assigned to the individual hero classes. Certain elements have advantages and disadvantages over the others. Opposing characters are sometimes depicted with a preform of the fog of war that hides their skills and class. Another special feature are neutral animals, which are considered tamed after their defeat and can be used by the character in combat. If a character dies in this game, his / her death is final.

An innovation for the time was the two-player mode that this game offered. With it, two Game Gear could be connected via a link cable, and a game of two hero groups of nine characters from a predefined hero pool could be played against each other.

The game has also been available as a download for Nintendo 3DS since June 2013.
