The programs that run in the various desktop interfaces, such as word processing programs, use it. Ctrl-V was a keyboard shortcut chosen by programmers at Xerox PARC for use in text editing. Presumably the Vkey was selected because it is located on the standard QWERTY keyboard together with Z, Xand Cin the lower left row.

In Unix terminals, Ctrl-V signals that the next character should be treated as a literal . The reminder for this is "v for verbatim". This makes it possible to read keyboard combinations such as Ctrl-C , Ctrl-Z or similar control sequences that would otherwise be interpreted by the terminal. This behavior was adopted by text editors such as vi and Unix shells such as bash or tcsh , which support text editing on the command line.
