Culm Valley Light Railway

The Culm Valley Light Railway was a British railway company based in Devon , England .

The company was founded on May 15, 1873 to build a railway line from Willand to Hemyock . The concession was based on a regulation of the Railway Act of 1868, which allowed a simplified construction. The company received strong local support. The construction of the line cost £ 50,000 instead of the planned £ 20,000 and took two years longer than planned. Operations began on May 29, 1876.

At this point the disappointed owners had already decided to sell the company. In April the Great Western Railway acquired the company for £ 33,000.

As part of the Beeching ax , passenger traffic was stopped on September 9, 1963 and goods traffic on September 6, 1965. A dairy was served until 1975.
