The Cultus Lake Provincial Park is a 2,729 hectares (ha) of large Provincial Park in the south of the Canadian province of British Columbia . The park is about 10 miles south of Chilliwack in the Fraser Valley Regional District .
investment
The park lies for the most part on the southeastern bank of Cultus Lake and is bounded to the east by the flanks of a ridge and the boundaries of another protected area ( Liumchen Ecological Reserve ). The entire tourist infrastructure of the park is also located in this part. A smaller part of the park is on the northwestern shore of the lake. However, this part is not developed for tourism. The area of the park does not form a contiguous area, as there are small settlements on the north and south banks of the lake and these do not belong to the park.
The park is a category II protected area ( national park ).
history
The park was established in 1948, making it one of the oldest of the Provincial Parks in British Columbia . When it was set up, it had a size of around 1000 hectares. Over time, the park boundaries were redefined several times and the park grew to 2,729 hectares.
Flora and fauna
Within the British Columbia ecosystem, the park is located at the transition from the Coastal Western Hemlock Zone to the Coastal Douglas-fir Zone . These biogeoclimatic zones are characterized by a similar climate and the same or similar biological and geological conditions. This results in a very similar population of plants and animals in the same zones.
The park is mainly forested with secondary forests of common Douglas fir . However, coastal fir , giant arborvitae , coastal pine , western white pine , red alder , oregon maple and other trees can also be found in the park . The undergrowth is typical of the coast. There are, among other things, the Shallon shamrock , forest foam spar , moss bells and the sword fern , a type of shield fern .
activities
The park has several campsites with more than 300 spaces for tents and campers. There are also several group tents in the park.
