Saz

The cura [ dʒuɾɑ ] is the smallest form of the Turkish long-necked lute Saz . The plucked instrument usually has three double choirs, i.e. six strings and between 19 and 25 frets.

Design

The cura is usually tuned to the pitches DGA ( solmization syllables Re-Sol-La). This means that the two lower strings are tuned to D (Re), the middle strings to G (Sol) and the two upper strings (including the bass string) to A (La). The minimal detuning of the lower and middle double strings and the resulting beat results in a spherical sounding chorus effect.

The cura usually has 23 frets, with the lowest six frets being provided with a special mark (see picture below). As a result, playing the Cura is by and large compatible with playing the short or long Bağlama.

The sound opening is partly on the bottom of the instrument, as in the larger forms of the Saz, but partly also directly on the body, as with a guitar. The Cura is played with a pick , which is much softer than a guitar pick. Sometimes the cura is also torn with the fingers.

use

The Saz and thus also the Cura play a major role in Alevi religious ceremonies . In the past, the Cura was often used by Alevi dervishes , because its size meant that it could be easily transported and, if necessary, hidden.
