Palazzo Schifanoia

Palazzo Schifanoia is a Renaissance palace in Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna , Italy that was built for the Este family . The name Schifanoia is derived from schivar la noia , which literally means to abhor boredom , or better to flee from boredom , which is more precisely what this palace, an early Sanssouci , describes.

The palace is famous for the astrological frescoes by Francesco del Cossa and Cosmè Tura in the Salone dei mesi .

history

The client Borso d'Este

The palace was initially outside the urban development of Ferrara in a garden near other, delizie called pleasure palaces, of which only the Schifanoia has survived . The original building from 1385, commissioned by Alberto V d'Este , was one-story, without side wings and basically consisted of only one large hall for banquets and celebrations. Under Borso d'Este and his successor Ercole I. d'Este , the building was expanded by the court architects Pietro Benvenuto degli Ordini and Biagio Rossetti .

The original exterior decoration of the palace has not been preserved. The simple brick facade of today no longer gives an impression of the former splendor of the pleasure palace, with its stucco cladding and its geometric patterns made of colored marble imitations. The preserved representative marble portal was also decorated in color. It used to show the emblem of the Este, the unicorn , in addition to their coat of arms . In 1493 Rossetti added a terracotta cornice to the palace .

The great hall, the salone dei mesi , built by Pietro Benvenuto , was painted a. a. Cosmè Tura , Ercole de 'Roberti and Francesco del Cossa with frescoes. The stucco work in the sala della virtù is by Domenico di Paris . The stucco frieze shows putti, the symbols of the four cardinal virtues and the three theological virtues of faith, hope and love.

After the end of the Este rule, the palace came into the hands of changing owners, one of whom had the monthly pictures painted over in the salone dei mesi . He was u. a. used as barracks and as a tobacco factory. The frescoes were not rediscovered until 1821. Today the Schifanoia belongs to the city of Ferrara and serves as a museum.
