The Curtiss 10 hp (1909) was a motorcycle made by the American manufacturer Curtiss . The spectacular W engine was considered the most powerful series engine of its time. How many copies were made is not known.

Development and technology

Directly after his Curtiss V8 racing motorcycle, Glenn Curtiss developed a W engine, based on the design by Alessandro Anzani , which could later also be used as a drive for aircraft. In February 1909 the three-cylinder Curtiss 10 hp with 1,326 cm³ displacement and IOE valve control and belt drive was presented. The three cylinders were at an angle of 50 degrees to each other, the rear cylinder was supplied by a separate, the front cylinder by a carburetor; the combustion was initiated by battery ignition . The maximum speed of 90 miles per hour (≈ 145 km / h) was specified for the motorcycle, which had a monotube frame reinforced by a double top tube and rolled on 26 inch tires .
