The Curtiss R-2 was an American military aircraft .

development

At the beginning of 1915, the prototype of the Curtiss R appeared, which was renamed Model 2 in 1935. It was a larger version of the Curtiss N with horizontally staggered wings of the same span. The test machine flew as a land and float plane, and the crew sat in an elongated cockpit. Unlike the Curtiss N, the ailerons were arranged between the wings.

With the R-2 wings of unequal span, ailerons on the upper wing and a rudder with horn compensation were introduced. In addition, separate cockpits had been set up for the two crew members with a considerable distance from one another. This R-2 went into production at the end of 1915 and twelve copies were delivered to the US Army , which made very little use of them. A single R-2 was experimentally given wings of the same span again, and in 1916 two R-2s were delivered to the US Navy as float machines.

The Curtiss R-2 was delivered to the 1st Aero Squadron in late May 1916 and used in the war against Mexico . However, the performance of the twelve delivered machines was not satisfactory enough to use them on the American-Mexican border for longer.
