Cyber Monday

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cyber Monday is a marketing term and describes the start of Christmas sales through online shops .

The term Cyber Monday is strongly influenced by North America. The day is always on the Monday following Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November) and is therefore between November 26th and December 2nd. Cyber Monday is the answer from online shops to the traditional Black Friday (Friday after Thanksgiving), which in turn was launched by traditional / offline retailers. On Cyber Monday, online shops give discounts to attract buyers. It has become increasingly popular in recent years. Since 2010 Cyber Monday has also been advertised in Europe by some American online shops, in Germany particularly strongly by Amazon .

In 2013, Cyber Monday online sales in the US grew 20.6% year over year and hit record sales of $ 2.29 billion.

Cyber Monday in German-speaking countries

In contrast to Black Friday, Cyber Monday is of secondary importance in German-speaking countries. While a per capita turnover of 170 euros was achieved in Germany on Black Friday 2016, on Cyber Monday only a per capita turnover of 120 euros was achieved.

criticism

Consumer protection organizations such as the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer center warn against the offer because the discounts are partly calculated on the recommended retail price , which is usually above the usual commercial prices. Accordingly, the high discounts offered do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about actual discounts for this promotion. The magazine Stern even described the campaign as “Amazon's dirty discount trap”.
