Dérogeance

Dérogeance ( French , literally: "humiliation") meant the loss of the title of nobility and noble privileges due to improper behavior. This included, among other things, the exercise of professions which were considered incompatible with the nobility or not worthy of it.

Up until modern times in most European countries, the exercise of a craft by a nobleman led to dérogeance. The exception was England , which proved to be a favorable factor for the Industrial Revolution .
