Dörnle
The Dörnle in Widdern in the Heilbronn district is a tower watchman's house built in 1833.
history
The tower and fire guard of the city of Widdern lived in the old tower , a remnant of Widdern Castle, which was destroyed in 1458, until the 19th century . The tower fell into disrepair in 1833, whereupon the city council decided on April 29, 1833 to build a new tower watchman's apartment with a clock and bell just below the castle stables. The work was outsourced to local craftsmen in August 1833, and the new tower watchman's house was soon completed and occupied. Most of the building material was probably made of stones from the old tower.
The first resident was Heinrich Heckmann, who worked as a tailor and also regularly wound and lubricated the clock in Dörnle , from Bartholomä (August 24th) to Georgi (April 23rd) at 9 p.m. and on Sundays and public holidays to ring the second and third service call and to report any fires to the mayor and at his command to ring a storm signal.
The Dörnle was inhabited continuously until 1998 by guard families who had free right of residence for their special services. After the installation of an electric siren in the town hall, the task of ringing the storm in the event of a fire was omitted , but the bell continued to be rung by hand until the recent past, and winding the clockwork remained one of the residents' tasks. The old bell from 1833 had to be delivered for armaments purposes during the Second World War ; a new bell was procured in 1951. When the old clock was defective at the beginning of the 1990s, it was replaced by a radio-controlled electric clock in 1993. The bell was rung by hand by the last keeper , Lina Graf, until 1998. After Mrs. Graf moved in 1998 at the age of 76 for health reasons from Dörnle, which can only be reached via 93 steps, to her sister in the main street, the bell was electrified in 1999.
The local poet Ludwig Jehle took up a regional legend in his poem Das Glöcklein vom Dörnle , according to which the ringing of the bells of Dörnle once saved a "noble Fraulein Siegelinde" from freezing in the Harthauser forest .

The Dörnle is a solid, single-storey stone building on an almost square floor plan, on a high basement level built into the slope, with a gable roof and turret . In the transition zone from the gable to the roof turret there is a clock, in the roof turret is a bell that was cast in 1951 by the Bachert bell foundry in Bad Friedrichshall- Kochendorf. There is an inscription stone on the building with the inscription Built in 1833 by the city of Widdern for the tower at the upper gate .
The bell in the roof turret, procured in 1951 at the same time as the new bell of the Liebfrauenkapelle , has the strike tone g '' and a diameter of 52.5 cm. It is made of bronze and bears the inscription HOLDER FRIEDE SÜSSE EINTRACHT WEILET WEILET FRIENDLY ABOUT THIS CITY. STADT WIDDERN / JAGST MS The bell is also adorned with a frieze made of pine cones, ears of wheat and flowers.
