History and architecture

The Prague House of Trade Unions can be assigned to the functionalist architectural style, which was built from 1932 to 1934 on the site of the former municipal gas works. The building was designed by the architects Karel Honzík and Josef Havlíček . The facade of the 52-meter-high skyscraper is lined with ceramic tiles measuring 20 × 40 centimeters. It is from them that the popular name of this building, the Kachlíkárna, comes from . A total of 700 offices were set up in the building; the adjacent wing was originally used for residential purposes. The entire building was equipped with a modern ventilation system and steel windows for the 1930s. The total cost of construction was 64 million crowns.

In 2018 the union house was bought by Siko . The new owner made parts of the building, including the roof terrace, accessible to the public. It is planned to completely renovate the building and transform it into a residential complex.
