Lists on the subject

The DAO-12 , also known as the "Streetsweeper", is a twelve-shot shotgun . It is officially only used in South Africa . Its original name is Armsel Striker 12 . Their purpose in the military is house warfare; Police forces used them (mostly loaded with rubber bullets ) to break up demonstrations and riots.

development

The DAO-12 was designed by Hilton Walker in the late 1970s in Rhodesia, which was still in existence at the time . After the fall of Rhodesia, Walker moved to South Africa with his plans. It was here that he built the first specimens, which from there quickly spread all over the world. In the late 1980s, he revised his concept, because with these models the drum had to be turned further before a shot, as is usual with a single-action revolver. The revised version was called Armsel Striker Protecta and had a double-action trigger. The latest version is called Protecta Bulldog ; it is a double-action-only weapon, has a shortened barrel and does not have a shoulder rest.

Model versions

  • Armsel Striker 12 (original version )
  • Armsel Striker 12 "Protecta" (improved version with double action)
  • Armsel Striker 12 "Protecta Bulldog" (improved version with double action only and shortened barrel, without shoulder rest)

technology

The weapon works like a revolver with a drum and a pure cocking trigger. Hence the name DAO: double action only . The cocking of the weapon and the rotation of the drum are not only effected by pulling the trigger, in that case the trigger resistance would be much too high. Instead, there is a windable spring inside the drum, the force of which drives the mechanism forward and enables rapid firing. Fired cases are not ejected until the next shot, as a small part of the powder gases branched off the barrel empties the chamber next to it. The drum is only removed completely for cleaning; for ammunition, the cartridges have to be inserted individually through a loading flap.
