The DARPA Robotics Challenge ( DRC ) was an international robotics competition organized by DARPA to promote and develop technologies that can be used in rescue operations. It took place in the USA from 2012 to 2015 . It followed the DARPA Grand Challenge competitions and required semi-autonomous robots that can perform “complex tasks in dangerous, destroyed, man-made environments”. The DARPA Robotics Challenge was endowed with a total of over 30 million US dollars (23 million euros).

The DRC consisted of three competitions:

  • a simulated Virtual Robotics Challenge (VRC, which took place in June 2013)
  • the test runs DRC Trials in December 2013
  • the final in June 2015

16 teams took part in the DRC Trials in December 2013, of which the team from the Japanese robotics company SCHAFT , which was acquired by Google , won.

25 international teams took part in the final in June 2015, of which the team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology with the humanoid robot Hubo won.
