Darioush Shirvani (born March 20, 1963 in Shiraz , Iran ) is a German-Iranian filmmaker and musician .

Life

Shirvani began his artistic career with painting at an early age. He was a student of the master painter Kazem Adjdari in Shiraz for four years. He had to put aside his interest in music for the time being because of the prevailing social constraints. Later he was able to assert his interests and attended the "Barbád" music school in Shiraz. Here he was taught music theory , violin and santoor by his Jewish teachers . Shirvani soon began to compose simple pieces himself, which even then stood out from traditional music. Classical Iranian music and the so-called " Dastgah " or " Radif " were taught by various teachers, such as Latif Ne'man and Said Bahari.

Shirvani had his first film experience at the age of 14 with a Super 8 camera. Later he became a member of a youth group in which he shot several Super 8 films under professional supervision. At the age of 17 he became a member of the City Theater Ensemble Schiras (Theater Shahr-e Shiraz). He acted as an actor and assistant director under the direction of Nader Shahsavari and Khosro Mohazeb. From 1980 to 1985 he tried to make a total of six feature films in Iran, but he was unable to complete a film due to the prevailing censorship and political persecution. Finally, in 1985 he had to flee his home country.

Shirvani has lived in Germany since 1986, where he got to know different styles of music and other cultures. He had played in a wide variety of music ensembles ( classical , pop , jazz , folklore , South American, Turkish and Indian ). In Germany he has so far produced five films and written several scripts.

Press reviews

All films that Shirvani produced in Germany are so-called independent films that were produced without the participation of a film subsidy, a television broadcaster or a distributor and were shown at film festivals and in cinemas. Nevertheless, the press became aware of his films.

Robert Brunner noted in the Augsburger Allgemeine about the film “I am called Joseph” : “A detailed study of the environment, the fate of an individual case. The “no budget” film is technically perfect for its 16 mm format. ”
Klaus-Peter Hess and Patrick Wildermann from the daily newspaper, Münster wrote:“ ... the jury did not consider the most delicate but also most disturbing competition entry “I my name is Joseph ", the drama of a drinker staged by Darioush Shirvani with professional security and the sensitivity of a passionate storyteller, ..."

In particular, the movie “Schattenmenschen” was able to achieve wide press coverage despite limited screenings in German cinemas. The main actors of the film also received a lot of praise, especially the German actor Peter Reinwarth. The Münstersche Zeitung wrote: “Shirvani's cinematic poetics of social poverty gains its authenticity through images that do not hide their financial lack of money and thereby bring about a special freedom of expression. The characterful charisma of the actors is one of the film's strengths. A film like a little heaven for the homeless. "
Programmkino.de wrote:" ... is played well. Peter Reinwarth as an exemplary Paul is worth seeing. A sober as well as sensitive, formally simple film that deserves attention. "

Shirvani has composed and published numerous pieces for solo instruments and orchestra, as well as songs. He has composed the music for several plays and also for his own films. For the 100th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart he was commissioned by the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation to arrange a music program in his own way, which has already been broadcast several times.

Shirvani's works (both in music and in film) received positive reviews from the press. Many music critics are impressed by his virtuosity on the violin and the santoor. For example, Theresia Wildfeuer from the Passauer Neue Presse wrote: "Sensitive and virtuoso ... Fascinating, sonorous works." Or Barbara Cerveny from the Süddeutsche Zeitung: "Gripping and animated ...". Uhr from the Saarbrücker Zeitung noted: "The violin tone is unmistakable: slim, overtone, almost disembodied". And Angela Bachmair from the Augsburger Allgemeine: “Virtuoso and contemplative music”.
