Under the series designation 730, Deutsche Bahn ran two de-icing trains for the Hamburg S-Bahn between 1981 and 1990 . The intermediate cars were designated as the 731 series. The vehicles were created in 1981 by converting two multiple units of the DB class 471 (471 103 and 471 133). In 1989, the two de-icing multiple units were replaced by the de-icing multiple units of the DB class 732 (1989) .

The exceptionally hard winter of 1978/79 (see, inter alia, the snow catastrophe in Northern Germany in 1978 ), during which numerous icing on the conductor rails occurred and the S-Bahn traffic came to a standstill, was decisive for the use of the de-icing railcars .
