DB killer

Expansion of a dB killer

A dB killer ( decibel killer, also dB eater or dB absorber) is a replaceable component of a silencer . The purpose is to reduce the noise emission by increasing the dynamic pressure below the legal limit.

DB killers are mostly used in motorcycle sport silencers. The reduction in noise emissions is usually also associated with a slight reduction in engine power . The operation of a sports silencer on public roads, paths and squares in Germany without a dB killer is prohibited if the legal limit values for volume are exceeded by removing the dB absorber. Since May 1, 2014, this has been punished with a fine (before that, a fine plus 3 points in the register of fitness to drive (Flensburg)).

The advantage of such a silencer system is that it can be used both on the racetrack and in road traffic - because the dB-Killer is often easy to install, the otherwise too loud sports silencers can also be used in road traffic.

By removing the dB-Killer, the operating license of the motorcycle or moped is no longer valid , as the exhaust gas and noise behavior is changed.

Not degradable, but welded dB-Eaters as well as the external marking of the noise values are mandatory according to ECE R 41 . The ECE R 41 has also been implemented in the EU through the Euro 4 standard that will apply to new two- and three-wheelers from January 1, 2016.
