DEC Multia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The DEC Multia is a series of compact computers made by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).

The Multia, released in 1994, was intended to serve as a small and inexpensive workstation computer in networked companies. The Multia was available with Alpha processors (Alpha 21066 and Alpha 21066A) as well as with conventional x86 processors (Pentium 100 MHz). Windows NT was preinstalled as the operating system , but a number of other operating systems such as Linux or BSD could also be installed on the Multia. DEC later sold the Multia mainly to hobbyists and computer geeks, even without a pre-installed operating system.

A big problem with these computers was the poor cooling due to the compact design, which resulted in many units failing due to overheating.
