The DESS or DÉSS ( diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées ) is a university diploma . It was replaced by the master’s degree as part of the Bologna reform . The profile corresponds to a master's professionnel , i.e. an application-oriented master's degree .

In France , the Diplôme d'études approfondies (DEA) was obtained within a year after the so-called Maîtrise . The aim of the DESS was to prepare for a job, in contrast to the DEA, which prepares for a doctorate .
