CSS-9
The CSS-9 is a mobile, land-based ballistic ICBM of the People's Republic of China . In the Chinese armed forces, the rocket is called DF-31 or Dongfeng 31 ( chin. 东风 "east wind").
development
The development of the CSS-9 mod 1 by the ARMT design office began in 1986. The system was designed as a replacement for the CSS-3 and CSS-4 in use. The CSS-9 is based on the submarine -based JL-2 SLBM . The first test flight took place in May 1987. This was followed by several unsuccessful test flights. The first rockets were handed over to the People's Liberation Army in 1999 for testing purposes .
The improved version CSS-9 mod 2 or DF-31A was presented in 2002. This version has MIRV warheads and an improved guidance system. This system is still in the development and testing phase.
technology
The CSS-9 is a three-stage solid fuel rocket . It is controlled using an inertial navigation platform . A precision ( CEP ) of 300 to 500 m (depending on the shooting distance) is achieved. The improved version CSS-9 mod 2 has a Beidou (satellite navigation) steering system and achieves a hit accuracy ( CEP ) of 100 to 150 m.
The DF-31 missile is housed in a launch and transport container on a six-axis HY473 - truck is installed. The trailer is from a HY4301 - truck pulled. The system is road mobile and therefore difficult to localize. This means that preventive control is difficult to implement. A minimum reaction time from the drive to the rocket launch of 10 to 15 minutes is achieved. With the mobile system, the rockets can be launched directly in the base or on the street.
With the CSS-9 all strategic targets such as hardened missile silos and underground command bunkers can be fought. US and NATO experts see the CSS-9 as an effective second strike weapon , but can also be used for an effective first strike .
status
The People's Liberation Army has 20 DF-31 and 25 DF-31A missiles. Another 70 to 80 missiles are believed to be in production.
