The DIN standard DIN 19700 is a German standard for dam systems . The first edition dates from February 1953, others from December 1965 and January 1986. Before that there were forerunners under a different name: The “Instructions for the design, construction and operation of dams” with editions from 1930 and 1933. A revised version was published in July Published in six parts in 2004. The stipulations of the TGL 21239 series of standards applicable in the GDR were taken into account.

The norm includes a classification of the dams according to classes. The standardization and further development of the safety requirements for the barrier structures (dams and dams) of dam systems were decisive for the revision. Safety should be guaranteed even in extreme events.
