title Decorative fireplaces for liquid fuels - Decorative devices that generate a flame using an ethanol-based [sic!] Liquid or gel fuel - Part 1: Use in private households
Latest edition 2011-01
ISO -

The final version of the DIN standard DIN 4734-1 , relevant for bio-ethanol fireplaces , was published in January 2011. It specifies the requirements for decorative fireplaces that are operated with ethanol (liquid or gel). The standard also defines the testing, production and labeling of such fireplaces. The standard is of great relevance to safety, since with ethanol fireplaces, especially when refueling, the flame can blow out of the device, it can spread easily and can only be extinguished with difficulty.

The aim of this standard is to make the operation of bio-ethanol fireplaces, which are used in closed rooms in private households, safer. Evidence of the DIN-compliant design of a fireplace (fireplace) is provided by the TÜV .

Brief content

The following points are u. a. defined by DIN 4734-1:

  • In addition to general information, requirements for stability, leakage protection, the fuel container and the ignition device are also defined under the item construction.
  • In the section "Operating mode", the standard describes, among other things, the maximum fuel throughput, the combustion quality and temperatures for fire safety.
  • In a further point, specifications for labeling (e.g. nameplate, warning signs, warning notices) are made.
  • Under the heading “Instructions”, requirements for the instructions for installation, operation, maintenance and, if necessary, for assembly are defined.
  • Furthermore, required production control systems are described, which are intended to ensure the quality of production.

Parts of the series of standards

  • Part 1: Use in the private household sector → published in January 2011
  • Part 2: Use in the public / commercial area → planned (not yet published)

Other countries

In France there is a standard deviating from DIN for ethanol fireplaces under the designation NF D 35-386 Standard ethanol-powered devices - safety requirements and test methods . This is published by AFNOR .
