DOT number

The DOT number for tires for motor vehicles is generally referred to as the TIN ( Tire Identification Number ), which is required by the United States Department of Transportation ( DOT for short ) for productions from 1980 onwards. It is vulcanized into at least one tire flank and is used today by tire manufacturers around the world.

This "number" or character string encodes u. a. Manufacturer, size and date of manufacture of the tire.

In addition to the TIN, there are also other number codes of the DOT, e.g. B. for brake fluid .

composition

The DOT tire identification number TIN comprises four groups of characters:

  1. The first two characters, the plant code , indicate the manufacturing plant
  2. The next two characters, the size code , stand (for newer tires) for the tire size
  3. This is followed by an optional, manufacturer-specific code ( type code ), from which the trade mark must also be legible if it does not result from the plant code
  4. The last three or four digits stand for the production date (production week)

manufacturing date

Often parts of the DOT-TIN are affixed on both sides, but the date of manufacture (week code) is only affixed to one side of the tire: For tires with a defined direction of rotation, this is usually on the right, for tires with a defined outside.

  • The first two digits are the calendar week (KW)
  • The third (and from 2000 fourth) number stands for the final digit (s) of the year of manufacture

From 1990 onwards, many manufacturers followed the three digits with a triangle Good ( Goodyear , for example, did not use it).

From 2000 : 4 digits
4 5 0 3
KW 45 - 20 03 (November)

Age of new tires

The weekly code plays a role in the assessment of second-hand as well as longer-mounted new tires because of the liability of a tire next to the profile and the rubber compound also texture and age gums play an essential role. From ten years, sometimes even six, experts warn of noticeably poorer adhesion.

The six leading manufacturers are of the opinion that an unused tire - provided that it has been properly stored - can be regarded as new for up to five years from the date of production and can be sold as a new tire. Two North Rhine-Westphalian district courts have confirmed the five-year period for new tires.

Maximum age for trailers with 100 km / h approval (Germany)

For car trailers that have a 100 km / h license according to the 9th exception regulation of the German road traffic regulations , the maximum age for the trailer's tires is six years. If a tire is older, the trailer driver must limit the speed to 80 km / h.
