Lists on the subject

The DTCN F17 is a French heavy torpedo with a caliber of 55 centimeters.

history

After the Direction Technique des Constructions Navales (DTCN) (today Naval Group ) recognized the range problem of the DTCN L5 , it was decided to design a new torpedo with at least twice the range. The result was the F17. In contrast to its predecessor, it was initially decided to design the torpedo wire-guided. However, this means that the weapon loses its versatility. Autonomous searches that the L5 could carry out independently in order to then independently attack a target it found were not initially possible. Finally, when the French navy's first complaints came in, the governance principle was changed. F17P , a variant that was originally only intended for export, received both the Thomson CSF active / passive panoramic seeker head for automatic target detection and combat, as well as the option of wire steering for direct attacks. The first customer outside Europe was Saudi Arabia for its Madina-class frigates .

technical features

The torpedo, which can be used against both surface and underwater targets, exists in several versions:

  • The F17 Mod 1 is 5.90 meters long and has a range of 20,000 meters at 35 knots.
  • The F17 Mod 2 (introduced in 1988) is 5,384 m long and has a range of 20,000 m at an increased speed of 40 knots.
  • The F17P Mod 2 (introduced in 1985) is 5,620 meters long and has a range of 30,000 meters at 35 knots.

Experimentally, these torpedoes were equipped with a fiber optic control cable instead of the usual metal cable.
