The Palatinate D Bay 62 is a two-axle compartment car according to sheet 052 according to the car register from 1913. The cars were originally built as class C and were converted to class D as early as 1907 .

procurement

Between 1861 and 1890, the Palatinate Railways procured a total of 260 type C compartment cars with almost identical dimensions and construction principles. A large number of these wagons were subsequently redesignated as class D from 1907 onwards . These were both unbraked and braked vehicles. A special feature of the braked cars were those with so-called free- seat brakes . The wagons according to Sheet 052 were procured for the account of all three sub-companies.

commitment

The wagons were used exclusively in regional traffic and especially in the workers' trains to industrial centers such as Ludwigshafen, Frankenthal or Kaiserslautern.

Whereabouts

Nothing is known about their whereabouts, as the wagons of the former Palatinate Railways were not listed separately on the Reichsbahn , but were listed together with those of the KBayStsB . However, individual wagons were no longer listed in the wagon directory from 1913 (with updates up to 1916). Due to the age of the wagons, it cannot be assumed that they were taken over by the Reichsbahn in 1920.

Constructive features

Underframe

The frame of the car still had a mixed construction of wood and iron. The outer side rails were made of iron and had a double-T shape. The remaining cross members and the buffer beams were made of wood. As a towing device, the wagons had screw couplings with safety hooks according to VDEV, the drawbar was spring-loaded throughout. The wagons were equipped with rod buffers with an installation length of 600 mm, the buffer plates had a diameter of 370 mm. In the cars with a brakeman's cab ( D Pfalz 62 II ), the installation length of the buffers on the brakeman's cab side was extended to 800 mm.

drive

The wagons had riveted half-timbered axle brackets made of flat iron of the short, straight design. The axles were stored in split sliding axle bearings. The wheels had spoked wheel bodies and a wheel diameter of 1,014 mm. The suspension was attached to the spring brackets with simple straps.

The wagons all had continuous sidewalls.

Car body

The car body framework consisted of a wooden frame work. It was clad with sheet metal on the outside and wood on the inside. The side walls were slightly indented on the underside. The wagons had a flat arched roof. Depending on the design, the braked wagons either had a raised, open brakeman's cab, which was only accessible from one side, or a centrally located brakeman's seat built into the roof edge of one end face (free seat brake).

Furnishing

The hand brakes in the raised brakeman's cab or as a free seat brake acted on all wheels on both sides. According to the 1913 directory, the braked cars were equipped with air brakes of the Schleifer type, and one car had a Knorr type brake.

The cars were heated by steam. Some cars also had a compressed coal heater.

The cars were illuminated with gas lights. The storage container with a volume of 650 liters hung lengthways under the underframe.

The cars had a total of three compartments. Two compartments were equipped with benches across the direction of travel, the third, somewhat larger compartment also had benches on the long walls. In all compartments the space between the bench seats was dimensioned so that loads could be carried.
