history

The idea to create the dahlia garden came in 1927 from the head gardener Sandhack, who worked at Haus Schulenburg . At the point on the western outskirts there was a disused clay pit, which was not suitable for building because it was filled with rubble and ash. The area was filled with topsoil from the construction site of the Handelshof , the first high-rise building in Gera, and on September 1, 1928 the garden, designed by the municipal horticultural inspector Combecher, was opened. In 1930 a fountain donated by the Biermann family of department stores was set up; a work by Thilo Schoder .

During the Second World War, the dahlia garden was converted into a kitchen garden for the nearby city hospital, and after 1945 it was divided into parcels that were used by refugees and locals to grow vegetables. In 1950 the garden was restored to its old form; on September 17, 1950, the first dahlia festival after the end of the war took place.

Todays use

In the past there were several dahlia gardeners in Köstritz (e.g. Christian Deegen ), but today only the only dahlia nursery that remains in Thuringia, "Paul Panzer" from the Dahlia town of Bad Köstritz, supplies the dahlias for the Gera dahlia garden every year. The plants are looked after by the staff of the dahlia garden. For the dahlia festival on the last weekend in August, the audience chooses the most beautiful dahlia. The "Dahlia Garden Interest Group" supports the preservation of the garden with projects and events.

The dahlia garden was an accompanying project for the 2007 Federal Horticultural Show .
