from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Michael Daniel Deegen (born January 28, 1798 in Kahla , † December 1, 1888 in Köstritz ) was a German dahlia breeder. He is considered the first German dahlia grower and founded the first commercial dahlia nursery in Germany in 1826 in Köstritz.

Life

As early as 1812, at the age of fourteen, Deegen was growing his first dahlias from single-flowered tubers that he had received from the Belvedere Palace Park in Weimar .

In 1824 he moved to Köstritz and bought the Princely Palace with the garden behind it.

From 1826, thanks to a lottery win, Christian Deegen ran the first German commercial nursery for dahlias and bred other varieties there. He created catalogs with his varieties and sent the orders to France , Norway and Russia . In this way he helped the dahlia to spread widely beyond the borders of Germany .

The oldest German dahlia variety still on the market is Kaiser Wilhelm I , an orange ball dahlia, bred by Deegen in 1881 .
