Neighboring communities
Neighboring communities are Caaschwitz , Hartmannsdorf (near Gera) (not to be confused with Hartmannsdorf (near Eisenberg) , a community north of Caaschwitz) and Kraftsdorf in the district of Greiz, Silbitz in the Saale-Holzland district and the independent city of Gera .
history
The place Köstritz was first mentioned as Kostricz , a Slavic settlement, on a deed of attachment in 1364. A castle existed since the middle of the 13th century. It was probably on the Kirchberg. From there, the system was able to control and secure the Elster valley and the river crossing. The city emerged from two medieval mansions.
At first the city belonged to the margraviate of Meißen , in 1364 Köstritz came to the Reuss . From 1689 to 1704 a new castle was built in place of the castle . In 1690 the Reussian Counts von Schleiz (the Reuss younger line ) founded the Paragium Reuss-Köstritz for a side branch Reuss-Schleiz -Köstritz , which existed until 1918.
Around 1804, the castle park in the Elster-Aue was designed in the style of an English landscape garden.
Since 1543 the commercial "serving" of beer of the Fürstlich-Reussschen brewery in the lower tavern (today: Goldener Löwe ) has been allowed. The dahlia grower Christian Deegen founded a nursery in 1826 and thus initiated the town's reputation as a city of flowers. Christian Glenck opened the Heinrichshall saltworks on the Pohlitzer Flur in 1831 , although it ceased production in 1909 and was merged with the chemical factory built in 1845. In 1845 Adolf Sturm set up a bathing establishment, which was significantly expanded in 1865 by building a new spa house and converting it into a public limited company. The agricultural institute of Dr. Hans Settegast settled in Köstritz in 1886. From this, with an institute building erected in 1903, the Höhere Gärtner-Lehranstalt developed , which was relocated to a hospital in 1943 and closed in 1945. At this institute u. a. Ferdinand Tutenberg passed his exam.
In 1911, the new Thuringian women's asylum was inaugurated on Goldbach. A new school building was built in Pohlitz in 1912. In 1919, the development of the Gebind as a residential area began. From 1926 the place was allowed to call itself Bad Köstritz . The Thuringian Ministry awarded him then in 1927 officially the city charter . In 1933 the Elster regulation began from Gera - Thieschitz via Bad Köstritz to Caaschwitz , connected with it the first big changes in Köstritzer Park. This was followed by the construction of an open-air swimming pool with a 5 m diving platform in 1936 in connection with the Elster regulation at Paradies .
Since the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, forced laborers from the countries occupied by Germany had to do forced labor in the vital chemical plant and in the black beer brewery. In 1942, the former head of the Thuringian women's asylum, Werner Sylten, was murdered in the Dachau concentration camp . From 1943 Bad Köstritz was a hospital town . On the night of April 13, 1945, a column of prisoners from Buchenwald concentration camp was driven through the town on a death march , with 43 people losing their lives due to the terror of the SS . Those initially buried in various places were reburied in the cemetery and honored with a memorial. A memorial stone at the state regular school in Hergerstrasse also commemorates her.
In April 1945 US troops occupied the place, at the beginning of July they were replaced by the Red Army . Bad Köstritz was thus incorporated into the Soviet occupation zone , and from 1949 into the GDR.
In 1948 the Princely Brewery was nationalized. In 1948 the reopening of the Kurhaus as a rheumatism sanatorium could be celebrated. In 1953, a bridge of peace over the Elster with a span of approx. 800 meters was inaugurated as part of a new trunk road through the park - the first major construction site in the city after 1945. In 1969 the west wing of the palace was demolished, in 1972 the main wing. The first joint dahlia festival of the Bad Köstritz community association was celebrated in the park in 1979. In 1985 the Heinrich Schütz Memorial was reconstructed and re-opened on the occasion of the composer's 400th birthday.
In 1990 the Kurhaus was closed and demolished seven years later. The residential area Am Rosenhügel and the residential parks Am Birkenhain and Am Erlicht have been built since 1993. The modernized leisure and recreational pool and a beach volleyball facility were opened in 1998. A year later, the Karlskrona senior citizens' residence opened on the site of the former Kurhaus.
