Heinrich II. Reuss zu Köstritz

Count Heinrich II. Reuss zu Köstritz (born March 13, 1803 in Zeist near Utrecht , † March 29, 1852 in Erfurt ) was a German nobleman from the house of Reuss-Köstritz . He became prince on June 30, 1851.

Life

He was a son of Count Heinrich LV. Reuss zu Köstritz (born December 1, 1768 in Köstritz ; † April 9, 1846 in London ), a preacher of the Moravian Brethren in Haverfordwest in Wales , from his marriage to Maria Justine van Watteville (born November 18, 1762 in Herrnhut ; † 21 May 1828 in London).

He himself lived in Leipzig most of the time and was a great music lover. His friends included Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann , who dedicated his romances op. 28 to him.

After his death, he was buried on July 5, 1852 in the parish church of Hohenleuben in the family crypt of the Reuss-Köstritz family.

In his memory, on March 31, 1853, his widow ordered the construction of a “rescue house” for children in Hohenleuben. It was inaugurated in 1855 and continued as the Hohenleuben state children's home in 1950.

On August 4, 1846, he married Countess Clothilde zu Castell-Castell (1821-1860) in Castell . Robert Schumann dedicated his Drei Fantasiestücke op. 111 , published in 1852, to her . The marriage had three sons:

  • Henry XVIII Reuss to Köstritz (1847–1911),
  • Heinrich XIX. Reuss zu Köstritz (1848–1904) and
  • Heinrich XX. Reuss to Köstritz van Reichenfels (1852–1884).
