Karl Friedrich August Kahnis (born December 22, 1814 in Greiz ( Vogtland ), † June 20, 1888 in Leipzig ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian.

Life

Kahnis studied at the Universities of Halle and Berlin . In 1844 he became an associate professor at the University of Breslau . There he was supposed to represent the conservative Lutheran position, which was mainly represented at the Prussian court by the group around the Gerlach brothers .

In 1848 Kahnis left the Church of the Old Prussian Union and transferred to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prussia . From 1850 he taught as the successor to Adolf Harleß on the chair for dogmatics at the University of Leipzig . In 1864/65 he was rector of this university . Theodor Brieger was his successor . As a representative of Leipzig University, he was a member of the First Chamber of the Saxon State Parliament from 1857 to 1864 .

Teaching

Kahnis was, although he can be attributed to the Neulutertum , not a representative of a repristination theology . He understood the dogma as the result of a historical development and was accordingly of the opinion that the Lutheran creed must also be further developed. So it came about that he deviated from the Orthodox Lutheran positions on questions of Trinity theology , the doctrine of Holy Scripture and Holy Communion . This also brought him hostility from other neo-Lutheran theologians such as Hengstenberg and Dieckhoff .
