Christoph Ernst Luthardt
Christoph Ernst Luthardt (born March 22, 1823 in Maroldsweisach , Lower Franconia , Bavaria , † September 21, 1902 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian .
Life
Luthardt was the son of a royal Bavarian customs collector in Maroldsweisach. The transfer of his father to Nuremberg in 1834 was followed by admission to the local grammar school. In 1841 Luthardt began studying at the University of Erlangen , which he continued a little later in Berlin. During his studies he joined the Uttenruthia Erlangen in the Schwarzburgbund in the summer semester of 1841 . The ordination was on the 1st of Advent 1846 and subsequently the appointment to the grammar school in Nuremberg as a religion teacher and around 1850 to Munich as a grammar school professor.
Luthardt taught from 1854 as an associate professor for dogmatics and exegesis in Marburg , from 1856 until his retirement in 1896 as a full professor in Leipzig . From 1875 he was canon of the Meissen Monastery . One of his students was Ernst von Dobschütz (1870–1934), later a professor in Halle (Saale) .
Luthardt was a representative of strict Lutheranism and a member of the neo-Lutheran revival movement . He was one of the leaders in the theological debates of the 19th century. In 1868 he was significantly involved in the establishment of the General Evangelical Lutheran Conference , from which the Lutheran World Federation , a free association of all Lutheran world churches, developed in 1947 . From 1868 to 1880 he was editor of the General Lutheran Church Newspaper , and from 1880 to 1900 of the Theologische Literaturblatt .
